It is believed that the building was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century and a few years later the order of Saint Augustine converted it into one of the first hospices in the Americas, where the order's monks were housed before embarking on missions to bring Christianity to the Philippines.
In 1780, as indicated on hotel's facade, the building was remodeled and baptized as the Hotel of Santo Tomas de Villanueva. Since then, the building has proudly stood through each and every key moment that has marked the history of city.
